In Honor of Women’s History Month, the women who make up a part of the
Harris County Precinct One Staff are serving as guest contributors for this message.

Dear Friends,

This month, we honor women who broke barriers and made history as "firsts" in their fields, women who set records, and those who shatter glass ceilings, leading the way for generations of girls.

Women like Barbara Jordan, Christia Adair, Maria Jimenez, and many others who all decided they wouldn’t accept the status quo. From fighting to secure the right to vote, to advocating for immigrant workers, to uplifting trans women of color, women in our communities have been at the forefront of creating the equitable society we all deserve.

These are women who inspire us every day to fight for equity, not just for ourselves as women, but for all of the women who we serve in Precinct One and Harris County.

To that end, we are proud that today, Harris County Precinct One presented a resolution at Commissioners Court recognizing the work we have ahead to address the disparities women still face in our county.

  • The average woman makes less than the average man for the same job worked for the same amount of time. The disparity is even greater for women of color.
  • Women in Harris County are 50% more likely than men to live in poverty.
  • Women’s labor force participation rate is now 57%, the lowest it has been since 1988.

And in addition to recognizing these disparities, this resolution commits Harris County to centering women and all people who are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in our recovery efforts. Harris County needs bold policies for gender-equitable recovery that will meet the urgent economic needs of women while also addressing the long-term structural inequities women still face.

We are proud to serve you, to honor the women in our community, and to work not just during the month of March, but every day to improve the conditions for women in Precinct One and Harris County.

Sincerely,

Women of Precinct One
