Dear Friends,

Happy Fourth of July! I hope that you are having a fun and safe holiday this weekend with friends, family, and loved ones. Today, we celebrate our country’s independence, thanks to a movement of people who fought against injustice to create a democracy where everyone’s voice could be heard.

As we celebrate, however, we must recognize that the democracy established on July 4th, 1776 did not include everyone. In many ways, we are still fighting to ensure that everyone’s voice is included in our democracy.

The right to vote is currently under assault. Our access to the ballot box is being threatened by the latest U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allows new restrictions that disproportionately affect voters of color and the upcoming Texas Legislature's special session that will focus on voting restrictions.

Our democracy works best when everyone participates. That is why Harris County created an Office of Elections Administrator, invested in new voting machines, and created new ways to make voting accessible, like drive-thru voting and 24-hour voting. Rest assured that we will continue to protect and strengthen your right to vote in the face of these attacks.

But we also need you to get involved. This week, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. William Barber II were arrested on Capitol Hill during a demonstration to protect voting rights. Their ongoing commitment to fight for equity should be an inspiration to all of us. I ask that on this Fourth of July weekend you also take some time to make our country better by calling on your representatives to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act.

We need Congress to protect everyone’s right to vote. Our democracy will only live up to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence signed on July 4th if everyone has equal access to participate in it.

Sincerely,

Rodney Ellis
