Dear Friends,

As we near the end of Women's History Month, we have had a chance to witness history in the making this week with the start of the Senate confirmation hearing of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, she would become the first Black woman to serve as a Supreme Court justice. Judge Jackson summed up her inspirational path to this moment beautifully when she said during her confirmation hearings, “My parents taught me that unlike the many barriers that they had to face growing up, my path was clearer. So that if I worked hard and I believed in myself in America, I could do anything or be anything I wanted to be."

I am honored to have joined over 300 Black attorneys and elected officials in Texas who sent a letter to the U.S. Senate in support of Judge Jackson’s confirmation to the highest court in our country. She is an outstanding nominee for Supreme Court and the Senate should move forward with a fair and timely confirmation.

Women’s Commission

Earlier this month and on International Women’s Day, Harris County Commissioners Court created a nine-member Women’s Commission that will recommend economic opportunities and health outcomes for women of all races and ethnicities.

The Commission will conduct research, produce reports and engage with the community. The five court members each will have a Commission appointee and the remaining four positions will be appointed at-large.

A Women’s Commission in Harris County lets us convene women across the county from different industries, backgrounds, and perspectives to help the county best address the disparities that women face.

The Commission will foster critical dialogue and awareness of gender inequities in our community. It also will increase the quality of life for women and all Harris County residents. Each year, the Commission will focus on at least one issue related to economic opportunities and one issue related to women’s health care.

Standing with Transgender Youth
It is our job to protect the safety of Harris County residents, especially children. But transgender children in Texas and across the nation are under attack. Fifteen states have enacted or are currently considering laws restricting medical treatments to more than 58,000 transgender youth.

This week, Commissioners Court approved my resolution affirming our support of transgender youth.

It is cruel to disrupt the lives of children and their families and harm their mental health in the name of political theater and misinformation. I stand with the families at the center of these attacks. We won’t sit by idly while state officials weaponize their bias against transgender children seeking medical care.

Everyone in Harris County deserves to thrive. We are committed to continuing the work to build a county that ensures women, our LGBT youth, and anyone else previously left behind has that opportunity.

Sincerely,

Rodney Ellis

Players are required to remain seated, which allows those with physical limitations to participate on a level playing field with those who may be more active. It’s not about winning and losing, but just getting some exercise while letting the competitive juices flow.
Come join us and make new friends every Thursday at Lincoln Community Center from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm.  To register, please click here.

"Volleyball is a sport I have always loved playing when I was younger. However, as I have aged and realized I'm not as agile as I once was to cover the court, chair volleyball has given me the joy of the game again.  My teammates are enthusiastic and just downright fun to be around.  It is good exercise and who doesn’t like having fun."
