Dear Friends,

Researchers are predicting this year’s hurricane season, which starts June 1 and ends Nov. 30, will be more active than usual. This will be the seventh consecutive above average season, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service.

Before the season starts, scientists can make predictions on the number of storms. But it’s impossible to figure out where storms will land before they form. However, there’s one thing experts agree on: Pre-storm preparation helps to protect you, your family and your property.

You can find a disaster supply kit checklist and an evacuation map on ReadyHarris.org. Of course, one of the best tips on evacuation is to leave early, especially if you are traveling with young children, elderly family members or people with functional access needs.

Now is the time to start preparing weeks before any storm enters the Gulf. In fact, readyharris.org says: “Preparedness in Harris County is not just for Hurricane Season. Avoid panic buying by stocking up on these items over the entire year. It is safer, more efficient and less expensive than waiting until disaster strikes.”

This American Red Cross article,
Now is the Time to Prepare for the 2022 Hurricane Season, also provides information on getting your homes ready for a storm, protecting your pets and evacuating dangerous, low-lying areas.

Remember, there’s never too much storm-preparation information to review. I highly encourage you to read and listen to information from credible sources. I want everyone to be safe this season. The best way to do that is to prepare in advance.

Sincerely,

Rodney Ellis
