Dear Friend,

The tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX weighs heavily on my heart. I join everyone in mourning the tragic loss of life and offer my condolences to the victims, their families, first responders, and everyone forever altered by this heinous act. There aren’t words to fully capture the heartache and outrage that we’re all feeling. Nineteen children are gone along with their beloved teachers who died defending them from an 18-year-old who, without question or restriction, was able to legally purchase semi-automatic rifles and 375 rounds of battlefield ammunition. Weapons of war don’t belong in our classrooms or communities.

This is the fifth mass shooting in Texas in less than 5 years, and it follows the deadly massacre in Buffalo, NY earlier this month. Frequent mass shootings are but one symptom of a larger, more complex epidemic of preventable gun violence that is claiming lives every single day. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among children nationwide, and it’s getting worse.

Enough is enough. For decades now, the NRA-backed gun lobby has fought reform at the state and federal level and passed laws that allow for easy access to guns. It’s time for us all to stand up to the NRA and their cowardly enablers who rush to defend the gun lobby after every mass shooting instead of taking action to protect our children. Politicians who stand in the way of common-sense gun reform need to step aside or do their job. Our gun laws should protect people instead of the gun lobby. Period.

The NRA is gathering today in Houston for its annual meeting at the George R. Brown Convention Center. And the same politicians who offer nothing but thoughts and prayers will be there to devise other ways for the gun lobby to block reasonable gun safety measures and evade responsibility. In Texas, NRA-funded politicians have passed irresponsible and dangerous gun laws despite objections from law enforcement, gun violence victims, and everyday Texans because they’re beholden to the NRA instead of the people they’re supposed to serve and protect.

We’re doing our part in Harris County, but it’s going to take all of us channeling our moral courage, righteous anger, and commitment to safety to solve this crisis. We must take action as a community to prevent gun violence and demand common-sense gun safety policies from our leaders at every level of government to get guns off the street and out of dangerous hands.

We owe it to the victims of Uvalde and Buffalo and gun violence victims everywhere.
